I concur. The food at Striped Bass was very tasty, but considering the prices, the portions were EXTREMELY small. I can only assume that people come here to be seen. If that's what you're into, then this is the place. I did stay for dessert and I ordered sorbet. What I received was 3 melon-ball-sized scoops on a plate drizzled with flavored goo. My date and I went out to another restaurant for a quite bite to eat immediately after leaving Striped Bass because we were both still so hungry.- Is follow up to post by lmbost ...
While this restaurant may be the "talk of the town", my recent experience with the food and its pricing left me feeling grossly disappointed and, quite frankly, robbed! My spouse and I have very refined palates and are never one to balk at paying the big bucks for a great dinner out, so the $180 (incl $30 liquor + tip) that we dropped for two wouldn't have fazed us in the least if we felt we got our money's worth. My $15 appetizer of seared dayboat sea scallops consisted of two (yes, two!) quarter-sized morsels accompanied by a few shreads of nouveau greens & a bit of sauce. For this price and portion size, I thought the chef surely must have traveled to the Grand Banks to dive for them himself! This course was followed by an even more disappointing entree, the $42 grilled Maine lobster, which was basically an 8oz split overcooked lobster tail served on a bed of beans with some flavorless reduction sauce and a bit of claw meat garnish. My spouse's appetizer & entree were less disappointing ($19 raw oyster selection, and $30 seared salmon) but we both left very hungry and undersatisfied overall with the experience. We left before dessert or a cheese plate and coffee could pick our pockets for another $50.00. So buyer beware - if you wish to pay for atmosphere and service - this is your place - but if you also like to have food included in your tab - pack a picnic or eat before you go. Or better yet, take your $$$$ a few blocks away to Buddakan where the service, ambiance AND FOOD won't disappoint!
